Overview
- Tote picking is a way to stay organised by assigning a physical tote (bin or container) to each order as you pick. As you scan items, they’re grouped under that tote, so you always know which items belong together.
- It makes handover between pickers and packers easy—each tote clearly represents one order (or group of orders), so packers can simply scan the tote to see exactly what needs to be packed. Tote picking also helps reduce packing errors, supports faster processing, and improves accuracy across your workflow.
- In Starshipit, you scan items into totes using the Pick and Pack app, then scan the tote again to pack the order—either again in the mobile app or the web app using Starshipit Workflows.
Step 1: Set up your device
Before you start picking, open the Starshipit mobile app and go to: Settings → Tote Settings, then turn on:
- Enable tote functionality during picking
- Packing tab default to tote scan (optional – keeps you on the right screen when packing)

Restrict totes
- Choose One order per tote if you want to keep it simple.
- Or None if you plan to group multiple orders into the same tote.

Release totes upon picking complete
Turn this on if you want totes to be automatically cleared after each pick.
Step 2: Start picking
- On your phone, head to the Picking tab.
- Tap an order, then hit Begin Picking.
- You’ll now see a prompt to scan or enter a tote ID.
- Scan using your camera or Bluetooth scanner, or just type it in.
- Once scanned, that tote becomes your active tote. You’re now picking into it.
- Start scanning the items. Each one gets assigned to that tote as you go.
- When you're done, hit Complete Picking.
You’ve now got a tote full of items tied to that order.
Bonus: Managing your totes
If you scroll to All totes on this device, you’ll see a list of all the totes you’ve been using. From here, if you tap on a specific one, you can:
- Switch between totes if you're picking for multiple orders.
- Remove an item from a tote if you made a mistake.
- Mark a tote as full so no one can add anything else to it.
- Unselect the active tote to stop picking into it.
Step 3: Pack the orders
Option A: Pack on your mobile
- Go to the Packing tab in the app.
- Scan or type in the tote ID.
- You’ll only see orders linked to that tote.
- Choose an order, validate the items, mark as packed and/or print your label, and you’re done.
Option B: Pack on the web app
- In the web app, go to Starshipit Workflows.
- Make sure Pack by Tote is ticked.
- Scan or type in the tote ID.
- If there is:
- One order in the tote – it opens right away.

Multiple orders – you’ll choose which one to pack.
- From here, you will land in our packing validation screen for you to scan each item and print the shipping label.
