Overview

Starshipit supports shipping dangerous goods (DG) with NZ Post for both Domestic and International services. This feature enables businesses to declare and transmit DG details associated with items in a shipment to comply with transport of dangerous goods.

To use this functionality, you must configure the dangerous goods settings in Starshipit. You can define or add DG classifications at the order level, set default DG types, or use automation rules to streamline the process.

Additionally, Starshipit allows you to generate DG-specific documentation required for transport, helping ensure shipments meet regulatory requirements while simplifying the shipping workflow.

Setting up dangerous goods for NZ Post

To ship dangerous goods with NZ Post, you'll first need to integrate your NZ Post Domestic & International account into Starshipit. Follow our guide on NZ Post Domestic & NZ Post International set-up.

Note
Only authorized NZ Post accounts can ship dangerous goods. If your account hasn’t been enabled for DG shipments, contact your NZ Post account manager.

Adding dangerous goods Details

Before shipping, you must add dangerous goods details under courier settings.

  1. Go to Settings > Couriers.
  2. Select NZ Post Domestic or NZ Post International.
  3. Navigate to the Dangerous Goods tab.
  4. Add Signatory details (This applies to all DG entries).
  5. Click Add new to create a new dangerous goods type.
  6. Fill in all required DG details.
    • Refer to the Material Safety Data Sheet of the product if needed.
  7. Click Save.

Recommendation: Ensure all fields are correctly filled out for hassle-free shipping.

Note
Additionally, NZ Post requires DG package quantity and weight. This information will be automatically calculated based on the number and weight of packages in the shipment.

Sending orders containing dangerous goods

You can indicate a shipment contains dangerous goods in the following ways:

Before you start processing (Recommended)

To simplify the process and allow for reuse, add DG tags first:

  1. In Starshipit, navigate to Settings > Tags.
  2. Click Add New.
  3. Enter the UN Number of the Dangerous Goods (DG) you want to assign, e.g., UN3081.
  4. Click Save.

At the order level

  1. Open the order details.
  2. Go to the Tags section:
    • Classic UI: Located below the Items section
    • New UI: Located in the right panel
  3. Select the DG tag (UN Number) you want to assign:
    • Alternatively, enter the DG’s UN Number manually (Ensure the DG details are set up in the DG settings).
  4. For NZ Post Domestic only, select the DG add-on.
  5. Print the order.

On print, Starshipit will automatically send the DG details matching the assigned DG tags to NZ Post Domestic & NZ Post International.

Assigning dangerous goods using rules

  1. In Starshipit, navigate to Settings > Rules.
  2. Click Add New Rule.
  3. Define any condition (e.g., SKU equals 12345).

  5. In the Value dropdown, select the DG UN Number.
  6. Click Save.

Once set up, UN tags will be automatically assigned to orders meeting the conditions upon import.

Default dangerous goods

You can set one of your DG entries as the default. This means that:

  • The details of this DG entry will be automatically passed to NZ Post when the DG add-on is selected for a shipment.
  • This applies when no specific DG tag is assigned to the shipment.

Printing Dangerous Goods Declaration Form

NZ Post Domestic

  • The Dangerous Goods Declaration Form will be automatically generated as a PDF and downloaded to your computer when printing labels.
  • The form uses the Dangerous Goods  details from the Dangerous Goods settings.
  • You will require two copies to be printed and signed to meet compliance standards.

NZ Post International

  • No separate Dangerous Goods Declaration Form is generated.
  • All DG details are included directly on the shipping label.
