> Edit packing slip layouts and variables in the template editor, then save and check your printed output.

Customise packing slips in the template editor to show the shipment and item details your packing team needs. You can change the wording, layout and fields, then save the template for future packing slips.

## Before you begin

Choose a starting layout from the editor or the [packing slip template library](/articles/13382030529935-packing-slip-template-library). If you need to change printing behaviour or item sorting, use [Configure packing slips](/articles/360000026636-configure-packing-slips).

## Edit your packing slip template

<!-- tabs:start -->

<!-- tab:Classic UI -->

1. Go to **Settings > Packing Slip** and select **Configure your packing slips here**.
2. Select **Customise using template editor**.
3. Choose your **Template size**.
4. Edit the text and use the toolbar to change fonts, colours and cell layout.
5. Select a cell and double-click a variable in the list to insert shipment or item information. Use the [packing slip variables reference](/articles/1791063593093-packing-slip-variables-reference) to choose the right field. Keep item table variables inside the item table.
6. Click **Save template** to save the edited layout.
7. Click **Save** to save the packing slip settings.

<!-- tab:UI 2.0 -->

1. Go to **Settings > Packing slips**.
2. Under **Packing slips**, select **New custom template editor**.
6. Click **Save**.

<!-- tabs:end -->

## Check the saved template

Reopen the editor and confirm that your changes are still there. Print a packing slip for an existing order and check that the layout fits the page, shipment fields contain the expected values, and each item appears on the correct row.

If a field prints as its variable name, check its spelling against the variable list. If item values appear in the wrong place, check that item table variables are inside the item table and order totals are outside it.

## FAQs

<!-- faq:start -->

<!-- faq:question -->Can I edit the template in Excel?<!-- /faq:question -->

Yes. Export the template as an `.xlsx` file, edit it in Excel, then import it back into the template editor. Save the template and check a printed packing slip after importing it.
