> Choose a paper-based, barcode-assisted, packing-validation, or scale-assisted workflow in the Starshipit web app.

Choose how your team will pick and pack orders in the Starshipit web app. Barcode scanning is optional—you can use printed documents, scanning, USB scales, or a combination that matches your operation.

## Compare the workflows

| Workflow | Choose it when | Start with |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Packing slips | A picker or packer needs one document for each order. | [Print packing slips](/articles/90200000000515-print-packing-slips) |
| Packing summaries | Your team picks items for several orders in one batch. | [Print packing summaries](/articles/360001972155-print-packing-summaries) |
| Scan to open or print | You want to open or print an order by scanning its order barcode. | [Scan to open and print](/articles/360000984255-scan-to-open-and-print) |
| Packing Validation | A packer should scan each item to confirm the order is correct. | [Scan to validate items](/articles/6811966579215-scan-to-validate-items) |
| Tote picking | Pickers collect several orders and keep their items separated in physical totes. | [Scan totes for picking](/articles/12616572135055-scan-totes-for-picking) |
| Product-SKU printing | You ship many single-item orders and want a product scan to find the next matching order. | [Scan and print labels by product SKU](/articles/10931058747407-scan-and-print-labels-by-product-sku) |
| Scale-assisted packing | A packer weighs each completed package before printing its label. | [Weigh a package using USB scales](/articles/90200000000513-weigh-a-package-using-usb-scales) |

## Combine workflows

These options are not mutually exclusive. For example, your team can:

1. Print a packing summary for batch picking.
2. Move each order into a separate tote.
3. Scan each item with Packing Validation.
4. Weigh the completed package using USB scales.
5. Print the shipping label.

Start with the smallest workflow that solves the immediate problem. Add barcode scanning or hardware only when it removes a repeated manual step or reduces packing errors.

If your team wants to pick and pack from phones or tablets instead, use the [Starshipit Pick & Pack mobile app](/categories/orders-manifests-reports/starshipit-pick-and-pack).
