# Set authority to leave or require a signature

> Choose and automate authority-to-leave or signature-required delivery options for supported courier services.

Choose whether a supported courier can leave a parcel without a signature or must collect a signature on delivery.

## Before you begin

- Check that your courier and service support the delivery option you want to use.
- Confirm the courier's requirements before applying the option to your shipments. Availability, behaviour and price can vary by courier and service.

## Choose the right delivery option

- **Authority to leave (ATL)** allows a courier to leave the parcel in a safe place when the recipient is unavailable.
- **Signature required** asks the courier to collect a signature when the parcel is delivered.

## Set a default for a courier

Some courier integrations let you set a default delivery option in their advanced settings:

1. Go to **Settings > Couriers**.
2. Open the settings for your courier.
3. Select **Advanced**.
4. Enable the supported authority-to-leave, safe-drop, or signature-required option.
5. Select **Save**.

The available setting and its name vary by courier. Review the courier's setup guide if the option does not appear.

## Apply a delivery option with a rule

Use a rule when the option should apply only to matching orders, such as high-value orders:

1. Go to **Settings > Rules**.
2. Select **Add a new rule**.
3. Add the conditions that identify the orders.
4. Add **Set Authority To Leave** or **Set Signature Required** as the action, then set it to `True`.
5. Select **Save**.

To apply the rule to orders already in **New**, select **Run rules now**.

## Verify the delivery option

Before printing, open a matching order and check that the expected delivery option has been applied. Confirm the final service and price before you print the label.
