# Get started with international shipping

International shipments need complete product, customs, and tax information before you print a label. Use this checklist to prepare an order and reduce avoidable customs delays.

## Before you begin

- Confirm your courier and service support the destination and the goods you are sending.
- Check destination restrictions with your courier or the relevant customs authority.
- Confirm which tax registrations and delivery terms apply to your business. Starshipit cannot provide tax or customs advice.

## Prepare your international shipping data

1. Add an accurate description, value, weight, and quantity for every item.
2. [Set up HS codes](/articles/360002120496-set-up-hs-codes-for-international-shipments) so customs can classify the goods.
3. [Set the country of origin](/articles/360002751836-set-country-of-origin-for-international-shipments) for each item.
4. [Add shipper tax numbers](/articles/360002115215-set-up-shipper-tax-numbers) such as IOSS, EORI, VAT, or GST when required.
5. [Add receiver tax numbers](/articles/9133191385-receiver-tax-numbers) when the destination or courier requires them.
6. [Configure additional parties](/articles/360002115335-set-up-additional-parties-addresses) when the buyer, seller, importer, or exporter differs from the sender or receiver.
7. [Choose who pays duties and taxes](/articles/4415554835215-configuring-your-shipment-s-ddp-ddu) before selecting the delivery service.
8. Add any [additional shipping documents](/articles/4407149410703-add-additional-shipping-documentation-to-orders-document-manager) required by the courier or destination.

## Add an Export Declaration Number for high-value Australia Post shipments

For Australia Post international shipments sent from Australia, an Export Declaration Number (EDN) is required when the goods are valued at AUD $2,000 or more. An EDN is also required for goods that need an export permit, regardless of value. Australia Post does not issue the EDN; you or your authorised export agent must lodge the export declaration with the Australian Border Force first.

Do not enter an order number, Australia Post account number, or invoice number in **Export number**. Enter the EDN returned by the Australian Border Force or your authorised export agent.

1. Confirm the total value of the items in the shipment and whether the goods need an export permit.
2. Lodge an export declaration with the [Australian Border Force](https://www.abf.gov.au/sdg-subsite/Pages/Exports-Overview.aspx), or ask your authorised export agent to lodge it for you.
3. Wait until you receive the EDN and its export status from the Australian Border Force or your agent.
4. Open the order in Starshipit and select the Australia Post international service.
5. In **Customs details**, enter the EDN in **Export number**.
6. Review the customs information, then print the label.

If the shipment is below AUD $2,000 and does not need an export permit, leave **Export number** blank unless Australia Post or your export agent tells you otherwise. ## Check the order before printing

Open the order and confirm the delivery address, item details, customs values, tax numbers, country of origin, and selected courier service. Resolve any missing or invalid details before you print the label.
