> Connect Klaviyo, verify a shipping event, and build tracking emails using Starshipit status and tracking details.

Connect Klaviyo to receive shipping events from Starshipit, then use those events in a Klaviyo flow to send tracking emails to your customers.

## Before you begin

Make sure you have access to your Starshipit tracking and notification settings and permission to authorise the connection in the Klaviyo account you want to use.

You also need a shipment with a recipient email address to check the connection. Keep your Klaviyo flow in draft while you configure and preview its messages.

## Connect Klaviyo

1. In Starshipit, open **Settings > Tracking and notifications**. In UI 2.0, you can open **[Tracking and notifications](https://next.starshipit.com/settings/tracking-notifications)** directly.
2. Find the **Klaviyo** section and select **Enable Klaviyo**.
3. Click **Save** before leaving the page.
4. Select **Connect with Klaviyo**, sign in to the intended Klaviyo account and allow the requested access.
5. Return to Starshipit and confirm Klaviyo shows as connected and **Enable Klaviyo** remains selected.

The connection method depends on the controls available to your account. If you see an **API key** field instead of **Connect with Klaviyo**, your account uses the key-based connection. Keep the existing key for a working connection, or [contact Starshipit Support](https://support.starshipit.com/ticket) for help setting it up.

## Check the first tracking event

Klaviyo creates the **Starshipit Tracking Status** metric after it receives the first event. Check this before trying to select the metric in a flow.

1. Use your next planned shipment with a recipient email address and at least one package.
2. Print its shipping label as part of your normal shipping process.
3. In Klaviyo, find **Starshipit Tracking Status** under **Analytics > Metrics**.
4. Open the event and confirm its order number, tracking number and recipient profile match the shipment.

Starshipit sends these supported status values:

- `Printed`
- `Dispatched`
- `In Transit`
- `Out for Delivery`
- `Delivered`

Carrier status updates depend on the information Starshipit receives from the courier. Receiving an event in Klaviyo and sending an email are separate stages; the flow controls the email.

## Create a tracking email flow

1. In Klaviyo, open **Flows** and create a flow from scratch.
2. Select **Metric** as the trigger and choose **Starshipit Tracking Status**.
3. Choose which status updates should send an email. For one status, filter the trigger using the event's `trackingStatus`; for several messages, use the status paths below.
4. Add an **Email** action to the intended path and edit its content using the tracking properties below.
5. Keep the messages in draft until you complete [Check the flow before going live](#check-the-flow-before-going-live).

A metric-triggered flow can run again for each received shipping event. Decide which statuses should send messages before making the flow live.

For Klaviyo's current flow controls, see [Create a metric-triggered flow](https://help.klaviyo.com/hc/en-us/articles/360003057151).

### Add tracking details to the email

| Detail | Template variable |
| --- | --- |
| Order number | `{{ event.orderNumber\|default:'' }}` |
| Courier | `{{ event.carrier\|default:'' }}` |
| Tracking status | `{{ event.trackingStatus\|default:'' }}` |
| Tracking number | `{{ event.trackingNumber\|default:'' }}` |
| Tracking URL | `{{ event.trackingUrl\|default:'' }}` |

Use the supplied tracking URL for your email's tracking link. In Klaviyo's **Preview & test**, select a tracking event and open **All properties** to copy its variables. See [Test and preview flow messages](https://help.klaviyo.com/hc/en-us/articles/115002774972) for the preview procedure.

### Send different messages for each status

1. Add a split below the **Starshipit Tracking Status** trigger.
2. Set each path's criteria using the triggering event's `trackingStatus`, rather than a profile property.
3. Match an exact supported value, such as `Dispatched` or `Delivered`, and add the email for that path.
4. Review the remaining path. Leave it without an email action if those events should not send a message.

If your flow editor shows **Trigger Split**, use that control to select `trackingStatus`. In the updated editor, select the trigger event's properties in the split's path criteria. See [Flow branching](https://help.klaviyo.com/hc/en-us/articles/115003883992) for the controls in your editor.

## Check the flow before going live

1. Preview each email with a received **Starshipit Tracking Status** event that matches its intended status path.
2. Check the order details and tracking link in the preview, then send a preview to your own inbox.
3. Review the flow filters, recipient eligibility and any path that should send no message.
4. Set only the intended messages live when you are ready to send them.

## Troubleshooting

### The tracking metric is missing

Check that Klaviyo is enabled, the connection is valid and the shipment has a recipient email address. The metric appears after Klaviyo receives an event; connecting the accounts alone does not create it.

If authorisation was declined or the connection has expired, return to Starshipit's Klaviyo settings and reconnect using the connection controls shown for your account.

### The event arrived but the email did not

Open the profile's activity and the flow's recipient activity in Klaviyo. Check the message is live, the event matches the flow filters and the recipient is eligible to receive it. Review the reason for any skipped message.

[Smart Sending](https://help.klaviyo.com/hc/en-us/articles/115002779311) can skip a message when the recipient was emailed too recently. Check that setting for the affected message as well as its filters and sending status.

### A template value or tracking link is blank

Preview a received **Starshipit Tracking Status** event and copy the property from **All properties**. Check the event itself contains the expected value and that the email uses the tracking metric as its trigger.

## FAQ

<!-- faq:start -->

<!-- faq:question -->Does a tracking event subscribe the customer to marketing emails?<!-- /faq:question -->

No. Sending a tracking event does not opt the recipient into marketing. Check the profile's consent and suppression status in Klaviyo. A profile's existence alone does not establish its sending eligibility; see [Klaviyo's consent guidance](https://help.klaviyo.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037101072).
