> Choose DAP or DDP for eligible NZ Post International orders, set who remits EU VAT, and resolve missing IOSS or unavailable-option errors.

Use the NZ Post International duty controls in Starshipit to choose who pays duties and taxes on eligible EU postal shipments. **DDP** (Delivered Duty Paid) means the sender pays; **DAP** (Delivered at Place) means charges are collected from the receiver. For DDP, you also choose who remits EU VAT.

## Before you begin

- Have an active [NZ Post International connection](/articles/204485655-how-to-set-up-nz-post-international) and confirm with NZ Post that your account is enabled for EU Postal Delivered Duty Paid (PDDP).
- Follow this procedure when the duty-choice and remittance controls are available on your account. If your account uses NZ Post's earlier backend setup, confirm its migration with NZ Post before changing that arrangement.
- Check [NZ Post's current DDP eligibility and setup requirements](https://www.nzpost.co.nz/business/shipping-internationally/sending-with-delivered-duty-paid). An EU address or a postal service code alone does not establish eligibility; the available options depend on the current shipment and service.
- If you remit VAT through your own IOSS arrangement, add the appropriate sender IOSS number using [Set up shipper tax numbers](/articles/360002115215-set-up-shipper-tax-numbers). A receiver VAT number does not replace the sender IOSS number.

This flow applies to eligible NZ Post International postal services. NZ Post Express services `IEXP`, `IEXPRES` and `IEXPDTP` use their existing flow.

## Choose who remits EU VAT

The courier setting chooses the remittance method when NZ Post offers both DDP methods. It does not turn DDP on for every order.

<!-- tabs:start -->

<!-- tab:Classic UI -->

1. Go to **Settings > Couriers > NZ Post International > Settings**.
2. Find **DDP Tax Remittance Method**.
3. Select **NZ Post remits VAT** or **Sender remits VAT using IOSS**.
4. Click **Save**.

<!-- tab:UI 2.5 -->

1. Go to **Settings > Couriers > NZ Post International > Advanced**.
2. Find **DDP remittance method**.
3. Select **NZ Post remits VAT** or **Sender remits VAT**.
4. Click **Save**.

<!-- tabs:end -->

**NZ Post remits VAT** is the default. NZ Post remits VAT through its IOSS arrangement and charges it to your NZ Post account. **Sender remits VAT** uses your sender IOSS number and your own remittance arrangement.

If NZ Post offers only one DDP method for a shipment, that method applies. If both are available, your saved courier setting applies. Reopen the courier settings after saving to confirm your preference.

## Choose who pays duties and taxes on an order

1. Open an unprinted order and complete its destination, items and packages.
2. Select the NZ Post International postal service and let its current delivery options load.
3. Review **Sender Pays Duty** and choose the available option that matches your shipping policy.
4. Save the order, then reopen it to check the selected service and duty choice.

| Available options for the shipment | Sender Pays Duty behaviour |
| --- | --- |
| DAP only | DDP is unavailable. The shipment uses DAP. |
| DAP and DDP | Select it for DDP or clear it for DAP. New orders default to DAP unless a saved choice or shipping rule selects DDP. |
| DDP only | Selected automatically and cannot be cleared. The shipment uses DDP. |

The same defaults apply to imported orders. A saved duty choice is checked again when you print, including bulk and automated printing. If that choice is no longer supported, label creation stops; an explicit DDP choice is not silently changed to DAP.

## Apply the duty choice with a rule

1. Go to **Settings > Rules** and create a rule for the orders you want to affect.
2. Choose the relevant conditions.
3. Set **Set Sender Pays Duty** to **True** for DDP or **False** for DAP.
4. Save the rule and check its result on an eligible order before using it for a batch.

Rules choose the duty option. Choose the VAT remittance method in the courier settings. A rule cannot make an unavailable duty option valid.

## Verify before dispatch

Check the saved order's destination, service, customs details and **Sender Pays Duty** value before printing. For sender-remitted VAT, confirm that a sender IOSS number is present. When a commercial invoice is generated for a DDP shipment, it shows DDP.

Use your NZ Post invoice to check VAT and PDDP charges. The shipping rate shown in Starshipit does not include those charges.

## Troubleshooting

| Problem | What to check |
| --- | --- |
| DDP is unavailable or the duty control cannot be changed | Confirm account enablement and the selected service, destination and shipment details with NZ Post. Some routes offer only DAP or only DDP. |
| Label creation reports an unsupported DAP or DDP choice | Review the order's saved choice and any duty rule against the current service options. Choose a supported option or service, then retry. |
| The remittance method is unavailable | Review the courier remittance setting against the methods NZ Post offers for that shipment. |
| Sender IOSS is missing | Add the appropriate sender IOSS number before using sender-remitted VAT. Do not enter it as the receiver's VAT number. |

For a continuing error, [submit a support ticket](/ticket) with the error message and the selected service. Keep IOSS numbers and account credentials out of the request.
