> Configure NZ Post Domestic base services, surcharges, sectors, and package pricing in Customise Rates.

Configure NZ Post Domestic custom rates by base service, surcharge, route sector, add-on, or package. This guide explains which options to choose and how to verify the final rate.

## Before you begin

Before creating a custom-rate rule:

- Set up [NZ Post Domestic](/articles/203806459-set-up-nz-post-domestic).
- Decide whether the rule should change the base service, a surcharge, or the full carrier rate.
- If you need sector-specific pricing, make sure the shipment has sender and destination addresses that can be used for the sector lookup.

## Create an NZ Post custom-rate rule

1. Go to **Settings > Customise Rates**.
2. Select **Add new carrier rates**.
3. Select **NZ Post Domestic** as the **Carrier**, then select the **Product**.
4. Select the part of the rate to customise under **Component**:
   - **Base service** changes the main NZ Post service price.
   - **Surcharge** changes an add-on price returned with the service.
5. For component-aware NZ Post pricing, select **Enable component-aware pricing for this rule**. Leave it turned off if the rule should continue to customise the full carrier rate using the existing all-in behaviour.
6. If you selected **Surcharge**, choose a specific **Add-on** or leave it as **All add-ons**.
7. Choose a **Sector** or leave it as **All sectors**:
   - **Local**
   - **1 Sector**
   - **2 Sector**
   - **Inter-Island**
8. Select a **Margin type** and enter the **Margin value**:
   - **Add Percentage Margin** adds a percentage to the selected rate component.
   - **Add Flat Margin Amount** adds a fixed amount.
   - **Set Flat Rate** replaces the selected rate component with the amount you enter.
9. For **Add Flat Margin Amount** or **Set Flat Rate**, choose whether to **Apply fixed amount** **Once per order** or **Once per package**.
10. Optionally select a **Shipping zone** under **Conditions** to limit the rule.
11. If you manage child accounts, select the accounts under **Apply to child accounts**.
12. Select **Save**.

When component-aware pricing is enabled, the rule changes only the selected component. For example, a base-service rule can add a margin to the transport price while a separate rural-delivery rule changes only the rural surcharge. Other applicable surcharges remain in the final total.

:::important
Existing NZ Post rules keep their current all-in pricing behaviour unless you enable **Enable component-aware pricing for this rule**. Leave this option turned off when you want an existing rule to continue pricing the full carrier rate as it does today.
:::

## Match NZ Post sectors automatically

Starshipit can determine the NZ Post sector from the sender and destination addresses when matching a sector-specific custom-rate rule.

1. Go to **Settings > Couriers > NZ Post Domestic > Advanced**.
2. Enable **Use ChangeLog sector lookup for custom rates**.
3. Select **Save**.

The sector selected in the custom-rate rule is then matched against the shipment route when Starshipit requests the rate. If the lookup is not available for your account, use **All sectors** or contact [Support](https://help.starshipit.com) before creating sector-specific rules.

## Apply fixed amounts per order or package

For NZ Post **Add Flat Margin Amount** and **Set Flat Rate** rules:

- **Once per order** applies the fixed amount once, regardless of the number of packages.
- **Once per package** applies the fixed amount to each package in the shipment.

Existing rules default to **Once per order**. Choose **Once per package** only when the fixed amount should be charged for every package. Percentage margins are applied once per order.

:::note
For component-aware NZ Post pricing, a flat rate on the base service does not remove separately priced surcharges. The final rate includes the adjusted base service and applicable surcharge prices.
:::

## Check the customised rate

After saving, create or open an order with the matching NZ Post service and route. Check the rate breakdown to confirm:

- the expected base service or surcharge was adjusted;
- the correct sector and add-on were matched;
- a per-package fixed amount was applied to each package when selected; and
- the final total includes the other applicable NZ Post surcharges.

The same customisation is used when Starshipit refreshes rates, creates a label, or saves the shipment price.
