> Mark products as on pre-order to pause inventory writeback and exclude them from restocking and replenishment until you are ready.

Use **On pre-order** for products you sell before physical stock arrives. WMS keeps their stock and order demand accurate while excluding them from restocking and new replenishment, and pausing inventory writeback so you can manage selling availability in your connected platform.

## Before you begin

* You need permission to manage products. Client-scoped users cannot change this setting.
* Create or import the product into WMS first. Each SKU or variant has its own product record and setting.
* Configure pre-order selling, customer messaging and selling quantities in your ecommerce platform. The WMS setting does not configure these for you.

Keep WMS **On hand** equal to the physical stock you actually hold. Manage any pre-order selling quantity in your ecommerce platform rather than adding stock that has not arrived to WMS.

## Understand what changes

**On pre-order** is off by default. When you turn it on:

| Area | What happens |
| --- | --- |
| **Products** | The product displays an **On pre-order** badge. A linked Shopify product's writeback status shows **Paused (pre-order)**. |
| **Restocking Insights** | The product is excluded from forecasts and generated draft purchase orders. |
| **Replenishment** | The product is excluded from new automatic, demand-generated and manual replenishment work. Existing jobs remain unchanged. |
| **Inventory writeback** | WMS pauses inventory updates for that product across its linked stores and supported inventory integrations, including manual syncs and queued updates that have not run yet. |
| **Stock and orders** | Physical stock, order commitments and existing allocations remain unchanged. Existing orders and holds remain in place. |

The setting applies to the WMS product across all its linked stores. You cannot use it to pause pre-order writeback for just one store.

Marking a product does not put its orders on hold or prevent allocation of stock that is already available. If orders must wait until you are ready to fulfil them, use [order holds](/articles/14700000000010-manage-orders-and-allocation-in-wms) separately.

## Mark one product as on pre-order

1. Go to **Products**.
2. Find the SKU and select its product name to open the editor.
3. Open the **Details** tab.
4. Select **On pre-order**.
5. Select **Save changes**.

Check that the **On pre-order** badge appears beside the product in the list. Reopen the product to confirm the setting was saved.

## Mark several products at once

1. Go to **Products** and find the SKUs you want to change.
2. Select the products using the row checkboxes.
3. Select **Bulk Edit**.
4. Set **On pre-order** to **Mark as on pre-order**.
5. Select **Apply Updates**.
6. Check the result and confirm the selected products show the **On pre-order** badge.

Leave other fields unchanged unless you also intend to update them. The **Leave unchanged** option keeps each product's existing pre-order setting.

## Check the result

After saving:

* Refresh **Restocking Insights** and confirm the marked SKU is excluded.
* Review **Generate from Demand** if you use demand-driven replenishment. Marked products should not generate new replenishment work.
* Check the product's selling quantity in your ecommerce platform. WMS leaves that quantity for you or the platform to manage while the product is on pre-order.

Continue using normal purchase-order and receiving workflows to bring real stock into WMS. Receiving stock does not clear **On pre-order** automatically.

## Clear pre-order when you are ready

Receive and check the physical stock before restoring normal stock planning and writeback. Also review any pre-order selling quantity in your ecommerce platform, because eligible WMS inventory updates can replace it after you clear the setting.

1. Go to **Products** and open the product.
2. Open **Details** and clear **On pre-order**.
3. Select **Save changes**.
4. Confirm the **On pre-order** badge has disappeared.
5. Check the product's stock, restocking eligibility and inventory writeback settings before continuing fulfilment.

To clear several products, select them in **Products**, open **Bulk Edit**, choose **Clear pre-order**, then select **Apply Updates**.

Clearing restores normal eligibility for restocking, replenishment and inventory writeback. The usual stock, demand, mapping and sync settings still apply. Writeback that you disabled separately remains disabled. Clearing the setting does not release order holds; release those separately when the orders are ready.

Clearing does not trigger an immediate inventory sync. For Shopify, [run a manual inventory sync](/articles/14700000000018-set-up-shopify-with-starshipit-wms#run-a-manual-inventory-sync) if you want to apply the current WMS availability now.

## Troubleshooting

| Problem | What to check |
| --- | --- |
| You cannot edit the setting | Ask an administrator to check your product-management permission and client scope. |
| Stock has arrived but the product is still excluded | Reopen the product and clear **On pre-order**. Receipts do not clear it automatically. |
| An existing replenishment job is still visible | The setting prevents new replenishment work. Review existing jobs separately. |
| Inventory does not sync after clearing | Check the product's independent writeback preference, platform link and store settings. Review **System > Process Logs** for sync errors. |
| Restocking still does not show the product after clearing | Check the product's visibility, warning and ideal stock levels, sales history and minimum daily burn rate. |
| Orders are still on hold after clearing | Review and release the order holds separately. |

## FAQ

<!-- faq:start -->

<!-- faq:question -->Does marking a component pause an exploding bundle's inventory writeback?<!-- /faq:question -->

No. If the bundle itself is not marked **On pre-order**, WMS can still use the component's stock when calculating that bundle's availability. Mark the bundle product itself when its inventory writeback should also pause.
